Learning About Electronic Dog Training Collars

Filed under: Pets — AquaMan @ 12:14 am

The invention and proliferation of electronic dog training collars resulted in a much easier, less time consuming dog training. Pet owners have found out that these collars saves them both time and money and can even allow them to train their own pets at home, instead of taking them to a training class or hiring a dog trainer.

Kinds

Depending on how they correct dogs, electric dog training collars are classified in three different types. These are electric collars, sonic collars, and citronella spray collars.

Electric Dog Training Collars

These collars operate by offering a harmless, mild static electric shock when the collar senses the vibrations of the vocal chord of the pet. There are a few methods to this as some products require the owner to make the correction with the push of a button.

The advantage of this type of training collar is the effectiveness in making the pet understand his unacceptable behavior. It is also a very easy to use tool. The disadvantage that is attributed by some to this collar is the effects of static used on the dog.

Sonic Collars

Other type of electronic collars use sound instead. This kind of collar functions by offering a sound that distracts the pet when he gets involved in unwanted behavior. These collars are very innovative and they are prefered by those who think that the static delivering ones are cruel.

Spray Based Collars

This third type of collars offer a different approach. They are equipped with a canister which sprays the citronella when it detects the vibrations caused by barking. Being harmless, this proves to be the best of all the electronic dog training collars available, though the use of it necessitates refilling the canisters used.

Five Ways To Protect Your Pet From Accidental Poisoning

Filed under: Pets — AquaMan @ 5:43 pm

When Patrick opened the door to let his beloved Beagle puppy, Bridget, back inside he could observe there was something not rightwith her. She was having trouble walking toward the door when she usually bounded up the steps to greet him. Patrick quickly scooped her up into his arms and after making sure she had no visible wounds on her that might be the cause of her problem, he went inside to look up the phone number and location of the closest Union animal hospital. After describing her symptoms, the veterinarian advised Patrick to take her instead to the Union animal hospital where Bridget would receive quick emergency care to diagnose her condition and receive needed treatment. It was determined that she had gotten into some poisonous plants which she proceeded to eat and had become very ill from it. A stomach pump was promptly given to her that saved her life. Be aware that there are a few common things that can make your dog very sick. Let’s just highlight a few of them:

Several plants can prove to be serious threats to a curious dog. Jasmine is a beautiful flowering vine that is to blame for many dog poisoning cases. Oleander is another plant with attractive blooms that looks so harmless but can be extremely deadly if eaten by animals or humans alike. Many plant bulbs can cause problems if ingested by animals including the common daylily. Therefore, when purchasing any plant it is important to do a little research to see if there are any possible dangerous consequences if you own a dog that is prone to eat anything available to him.

Mushrooms have been found to be a frequent origin of illness when dogs are able to get at them. Wooded areas around a home are often a wonderful breeding place for wild mushrooms and are easily sniffed out by hungry or just plain curious dogs.

Chocolate is one more apparently harmless but actually a very dangerous threat to dogs when eaten. A small amount usually does no harm but if a large amount of chocolate is consumed, it can cause extreme distress, and sometimes be fatal to a dog. Because a box of chocolates is often left on a coffee table for example during the holidays for guests it is easy to get to and not often considered to be dangerous for pets. Always protect your pet by putting the box of chocolates far out of reach.

Cleaners found in garages and basements can be a safety hazard for a dog. While most of these solutions are not appealing because of their strong antiseptic smell, many puppies are not put off until they have ingested some so to be safe it is best not to take any chances.

Spoiled food is one more enticement for a pet and can be readily found in unsecured garbage containers and even compost piles. This can be easily controlled by carefully disposing of any contaminated food and by having an area for compost that is completely inaccessible to any pet you may have.

Equine Medical Treatment Takes A Unique Type Of Veterinarian

Filed under: Pets — AquaMan @ 11:43 am

It would be quite unlikely you could locate a Northern Kentucky veterinarian who did not have a number of horses under his or her care. While many pet doctors rely on small animals to make up the majority of their clientele, this is not the case in this great state. It has been reported that a Union veterinarian specializes entirely in horse care due to the great demand in that area. While the skill sets are the same for any pet doctor, it does take some special handling for the much larger animals and a large amount of self-assurance to come near these magnificent creatures with assurance. There are a few additional things that an equine specialist must think about before deciding to concentrate on these large animals:

Equine specialists must be physically able to maneuver around these huge specimens at the time they are giving medical care to them. It can be a dangerous undertaking to be around an animal in pain who is capable of striking out and hurting someone without meaning to harm anyone. When called upon to set a broken bone, for instance, the horse can respond to contact in a threatening way simply in self protection and in so doing put a person in harm’s way. A good pet doctor can predict this response and be ready for it.

Equine specialists must be able to interpret sounds and signs of pain that the horse is unable to articulate with language. They basically are unable to advise you what is wrong with them. It goes without saying that many diseases can descend quietly and have to be found on thorough examination by a skilled specialist. Basic preventive care can pick up many problems before they can escalate into something bigger and harmful to the horse. Therefore, it is desirable that routine exams be scheduled and carried out just as with any other animal; the only difference is the doctor must come to the animal not the other way around.

Equine specialists must be willing to make “house calls” because it is extremely complicated to bring a large animal such as a horse to them. In practical terms, this means that this type of pet doctor will spend travel time going back and forth visiting his patients and will of necessity have to do a lot of driving. Even a small task such as a vaccination will require a home visit because of the difficult job of transporting the animal. A large task such as the delivery of a pony also happens on the farm in a barn or a stable.

Equine specialists must make themselves accessible when considered necessary for animal emergencies. This is where a larger practice has an advantage as there are more pet doctors to share the on call hours. One of the poignant truths concerning equines is that when they have broken a leg they rarely recover from it and must very often be euthanized. Even the famous race horse, Barbaro, who underwent six separate surgeries in all for a broken rear leg, eventually was overcome by his medical complications and had to be euthanized in January of 2007. He lived a painful nine months with the very best of care but to no avail. That is the sad reality of horses and leg fractures.

How to Know What the Best Dog Training Collar Is

Filed under: Pets — AquaMan @ 5:51 am

May people believe that the best dog training collar is the electronic one. That’s because trainiers and owners have seen results when using them with their animals. There are some that believe that the dog is subjected to pain, while it is actually the element of surprise that it’s used.

How they Work

The electronic collar is made by integrating a devide or small gadget to a regular collar. This device is placed around the collar and neck of the dog, and it’s where slight electric shocks come from. Instructions regarding the proper usage of these kinds of dog training collars are always included in the package.

Most of these electronic dog training collars instruct the dog owner to place the training collar in such a way around the dog’s neck that the device is directly beside the dog’s throat. Doing this ensures that the device can sense the rumble from the dog’s throat as it barks and is thought that the dog would then react appropriately. When it detects barking, the device will suprise the dog by emiting a small static shock that is painless, confusing the pet momentarily.

This surprising factor that confuses dogs into silence is the main reason why some trainers consider this as the best dog training collar. It’s important to note that the shock the dog receives isn’t painful or harmful in anyway, and it’s similar to the static electricity that we feel when we handle fabric.

Another advantage of this type of collar, is that it won’t make a difference where the dog is or who or what the dog’s barking at, since the collar is always there to remind the animal to control its barking. There are other options used to teach dogs to control their barking at night or when guests arrive to the house, however, they might require the dog to be within a certain range, or an owner to press a button in a control when the dog barks, which would mean a constant supervising of the pet.

Before you finally decide on a particular kennel for your pup, it is essential that you have already done a complete check and inspection of the center. It is important to consider the level of competency of the staff of the center as well as the safety features that are in place. The things that you must confirm when you are doing the ocular inspection include the overall condition of the surroundings as well as the kennel quarters, taking to mind the comfort of your small animal companion. You must remember that your small animal companion shall be staying in the center for quite sometime while you are away. It is important that the place does not make the separation more stressful. Dog Grooming Bath

Filed under: Pets — AquaMan @ 4:11 am

Correct pet hygiene keeps the animal happy and healthy. Bathing makes an important stage of a dog’s grooming routine and it can be performed weekly or monthly, depending on the case. Water and shampoo are bliss and any dog grooming bath is a great occasion to trim nails, clean eyes and ears and brush the hair. In case you lack the basic grooming skills or you are more in favor of professional grooming services, you can pay for a dog grooming bath with a local business weekly, once or twice a month. While hair brushing ought to be performed regularly, bathing hardly has any rules.

If you accustom your dog with bathing when it’s still a puppy, a dog grooming bath will always be a source of fun. When the animal is young, it is more playful and open to new experiences; consequently, start a bathing routine as early as possible. If you adopt an older animal and you can’t handle the dog grooming bath on your own, it’s your duty to have it done. Check with local groomers for grooming and bathing services in one, because they are usually cheaper. Depending on the hair thickness and the pet size, the costs are sometimes over $100 for large hairy breeds.

During the dog grooming bath, high-maintenance dogs try the groomer’s skills at the maximum. The advantage of professional services is that all sorts of bumps, lumps and even injuries may pass unnoticed by the owner under the thick coat, and the sooner they get detected, the better for the dog’s health. Don’t let your pet’s hair mat because mat removal is painstaking and costly. Moreover, such a delicate procedure really tries the dog’s patience. There are even cases when coat shaving is required for mat removal.

To conclude, do not neglect the importance of a dog grooming bathing. Ask the vet for the most suitable shampoo or cleaning product so that you may solve the issue of coat parasites as well. And don’t overlook the importance of coat drying, given the fact that there are few chances of blowing it dry. Consequently, try to always adapt grooming decisions to your pet’s preferences and individuality!

The Pet Funeral as a Way of Saying Good-Bye to a Beloved Pet

Filed under: Pets — AquaMan @ 8:05 pm

The animal companion is a member of the family. Whether or not you have children in the family, the pets become almost like children. They require as much attention as children. They need food and water, a place for snuggling to sleep, medical care, and lots of love. After spending many years from puppy- or kitten-hood to old age in the bosom of your family, you become as attached to them as you are to the human family members. The tragedy of this story is that pets age faster and live shorter lives than humans. This means that the death of a well-loved pet is inevitable. When this death eventually comes, the simplest solution is to allow the veterinarian to dispose of the pet’s remains. However, other solutions are available that are more sensitive and allow the family members to grieve and have closure. Just as a funeral is important in the death of a grandparent, a funeral can provide the pet-owning family with solace and a way of saying goodbye. In Greater Cincinnati pet burial can be handled by a Greater Cincinnati pet cemetery.

Burial of the pet can be done either at home in the backyard or in a pet cemetery. (Remember that you must check local regulations before burying on your property.) The provider might possibly be licensed funeral directors who are experts in assisting your family through the entire funeral and grieving process. They can provide a casket, a plot for burial, and a memorial service. Additional remembrances may be available, such as molded paw prints, memorial plaques with photographs, engraved nameplates, and even obituaries.

And after the sad episode of the pet funeral, life goes on in the family. After a time of healing, all members of the family may agree that it is time to bring a new pet into the family. On this day, sadness turns to joy. You must now temper emotional reaction with logical thought. Choosing the best pet is an important decision because the pet will be a family member for many years. But it’s important to remember is that the country is overpopulated with dogs and cats. It is a better option to adopt your new pet from an animal shelter than to support a puppy or kitten mill. Shelters always have cages full of adorable, loving animals to choose from. Especially in the selection of a dog, the next consideration is the temperament of the dog. This attention to temperament applies to both the temperament of the breed and of the individual dog. You may think a wire-haired terrier (for example) is an adorable animal, but the terrier is known to be a high-strung dog with a lot of energy and intelligence. Cute as such a dog may be, it probably won’t be happy and may even destroy your furniture if it must spend the day home alone while the rest of the family is away at work and school. It has been said that if the dog will be spending the day home alone, you should select a stupid dog. It will still give you a lot of love and devotion.

Of course, your relaxation will not be fully satisfying if you will not be able to find the perfect dog boarding Seattle for your furry friend. These special options may include among others special snacks and rations, aromatherapy, exercises and trainings, grooming and vaccination.

Although we can generally expect a clean environment for our canine pals, it is still wise if you are going to make the necessary inspection of the overall conditions at the kennel center. This is very important as you don’t want your furry pal to have contact with ay bacterial germs, resulting in viral infection or sickness. You must pay special attention to the surroundings, including the flooring, the ceilings as well as the walls of the center. Make sure that these certain spots are odorless and clean. An ideal center for our canine friend must have adequate ventilation with sufficient space for your pooch so that it will feel comfortable despite the unfamiliar setting.

It is also important that the kennel quarters are well within room temperature as you don’t want your mutt to get easily stressed out while staying in the canine holding establishment. One effective way to determine if your pooch will feel comfortable in the kennel quarter is to consider the level of comfort that you personally feel while inside the place. If you are not comfortable staying in the kennel you are considering for one reason or another, then chances are your mutt will not find the place comfortable as well.

Comsider the play area of the kennel to ensure that your hound has ample space for some play activities and exercise while you are away. The structure must also be safe and secure, this will include checking the safety features of the establishment.

There are some small animals that will only eat their ration on special or specific dish plate. If you have such kind of pet, then it is important that you make the necessary arrangement with the holding establishment to ensure that their special plate is provided to them.

A Loving Family Says Good-Bye to the Faithful Dog

Filed under: Pets — AquaMan @ 8:26 am

It’s a rite of passage for manycollege students. They are away at college, playing hard and studying even harder, and they get the sad news from home that their faithful old dog has gone to doggie heaven. It’s a very sad time. It happens during the college years because the young child gets the new puppy at about age five, and the old, faithful buddy-dog lives for about fifteen years. When the good ol’ dog’s time comes, the family wants to treat the remains with respect. In Greater Cincinnati pet cremation is a good option. In Greater Cincinnati pet urns are readily available from pet funeral companies.

As the family makes plansfor the old buddy’s funeral, they think back on all of the good times that they have had over the many years. It started onthe Christmas morning when, as a five-year-old, our college junior came bounding down the stairs to see the goodies that Santa Clause brought. Yeah, there was a yellow truck and cowboy hat, but what was making little noises in the kitchen? A puppy! What better gift could a five-year-old ever get. He runs to where he hears the noises, sees the puppy, and lets out a howl. (As does the puppy.) He kneels by the frightened little dog and buries his nose in the puppy’s soft, furry neck. Boy and Dog have bonded into a unit that will endure through Dog’s life.

As the boy and the dog grow together, they share many good times. When the family goes on their annual vacation at their lake house, the dog goes along. They tromp through the woods together. They both dog paddle in the water. Dad has to pull off ticks from their hair and fur.

In the winter, they romp joyfully in the snow, up hills and down, making snow angels, sledding. When Mom made hot chocolate for the boy, she made some warm soup for the dog.

After years of teaching his dog tricks, telling him all of his deepest secrets, the boy leaves for college. Living away from home for the first time is new and exciting and fun, but nights bring out a bit of home-sickness. Thoughts of the old buddy warm him as he settles into to his new life. Back at home, the dog is sad at first but eventually adjusts to the boy’s absence.

So now the time has come when the old dog’s days are done. The student leaves college for a weekend at home to be with the family and say good-bye. There are a few different options for taking care of the dog’s remains. One is to allow the veterinarian to take care of things. The family isn’t happy with that choice. They want a more memorable way to say good-bye. The next option to be considered is interment in a pet cemetery. The family doesn’t like this option-they don’t like coffins buried in cemeteries in general. So we come to the third option, which is cremation. They have located a pet funeral company that will cremate the old buddy’s remains, which can then be scattered in a green wooded area that any dog would want to call home.

Fish Care

Filed under: Pets — AquaMan @ 9:36 am

Owning a fish tank adds life and vitality to any home and one of the best things about fish is that they do not need a lot of care. Cleaning and feeding is going to be necessary. Half an hour every week should be all you need to keep your aquarium clean.

Daily feeding is recommended. Fish like to eat and will overeat, so be careful how much you feed your fish. Many pet owners like to feed their fish flakes but there are alternative foods available. A varied diet can benefit many kinds of fish. Many pet stores offer foods that are frozen or freeze dried.

To ensure that you fish are healthy take a moment when feeding to observe them. Watch to see if they are all eating and swimming the way they are supposed to. Look at each fish for any growths or abnormal behaviour. You want to detect any problems as soon as possible.

As part of your weekly maintenance you should test the water. The things you should check are the ammonia, nitrate and pH levels. Any major change in these conditions can result in potentially dangerous or toxic situations. Every week you need to change 20% of the water.

Once a week you should also check and see if all the equipment in your tank is functioning correctly. Take a good look at your filter and make sure that is in good shape. Depending on what kind of filter you own you may only need to clean it twice a month but check it every week. Examine all the cords and tubes attached to your equipment to ensure that they are still in good condition.

Never clean everything in your aquarium at the same time. To help keep the tank clean, pick one or two things to clean each week. Any more than this and you will cause spikes to happen in your water levels. Part of your cleaning should include the glass. You should scrape the sides of the glass to remove all the algae.

In order to make sure that your fish are vibrant and healthy you need to follow a good maintenance and fish care routine.
